A procurement-focused introduction to ASTM A333/A333M Grade 6 low-temperature carbon-steel pipe, including seamless/welded scope, notch toughness and common equivalence mistakes.
ASTM A333/A333M covers seamless and welded steel pipe intended for low-temperature service and other applications requiring notch toughness. Grade 6 is one of the most commonly encountered carbon-steel grades in that family.
A key point is already in the scope: A333 Grade 6 is not necessarily seamless. The ASTM standard covers both seamless and welded pipe, with the applicable manufacturing and testing requirements defined by the specification.
What ASTM A333 is for
ASTM describes A333/A333M as a specification for nominal-wall seamless and welded carbon and alloy steel pipe for:
- low-temperature service; and
- other applications requiring notch toughness.
The current ASTM catalogue lists A333/A333M-24 as active.
The standard requires control of the microstructure and includes tensile, impact, hydrostatic and nondestructive electric testing requirements as applicable.
Grade 6 headline properties
For Grade 6, commonly published specification values are:

These are useful recognition values, but procurement acceptance must use the actual current A333/A333M tables, specimen size rules, elongation formulae and any project additions.
Why the Charpy requirement matters
A333 is not simply “another 240/415 MPa carbon steel.” Its low-temperature identity is tied to notch-toughness requirements.
That means comparing A333 Grade 6 with another material only by yield and tensile strength is incomplete. You must also check:
- specified impact-test temperature;
- specimen orientation and size;
- minimum absorbed energy;
- heat treatment / delivery condition;
- chemistry;
- pipe manufacturing route;
- dimensions and tolerances;
- design-code acceptance.
For general impact-suffix terminology in EN structural steels, see JR, J0, J2 and K2, but do not transfer EN suffix rules directly to ASTM A333.
Seamless vs welded Grade 6
ASTM's official scope permits both seamless and welded A333 pipe. For welded material, the specification's manufacturing restrictions and test requirements apply; the current ASTM scope notes welding without addition of filler metal for the covered welded pipe process.
Therefore an RFQ should state whether the project requires:
- SMLS only;
- welded acceptable;
- or either route subject to the standard and project specification.
Do not assume “A333 Gr.6” means seamless merely because seamless stock is common in some sizes.
Is A333 Grade 6 equivalent to an EN grade?
There is no safe one-line universal conversion such as:
A333 Gr.6 = EN grade X
A comparison must first identify the intended EN product standard. For example, EN 10216-4 covers seamless non-alloy/alloy steel tubes for pressure purposes with specified low-temperature properties. That makes it a relevant family for comparison when the required product is seamless pressure tube — but it does not create automatic grade equivalence.

A333 Grade 6 vs API 5L
The fact that some API 5L grades can have similar strength does not make them substitutes for A333 Grade 6. The standards were written for different product/application frameworks and impose different toughness, manufacturing, chemistry and testing requirements.
When an MTO contains “LTCS,” “A333 Gr.6” and a low design temperature, preserve the ASTM requirement unless engineering approves a documented alternative.
What to put in an RFQ
For a Grade 6 purchase, specify at least:
- ASTM A333/A333M edition.
- Grade 6.
- Seamless/welded requirement.
- NPS/OD and wall thickness or schedule.
- Length.
- Required dimensional standard, where applicable.
- Impact-test requirements if the project is stricter than the base specification.
- Inspection document requirement.
- Additional NDT/TPI requirements.
- Project design code and minimum design temperature where relevant.
