EN 10210 vs EN 10219: What Actually Differs?

A practical comparison of hot-finished EN 10210 and cold-formed EN 10219 structural hollow sections, including grades, dimensions, section properties and purchasing implications.

EN 10210 and EN 10219 both cover steel structural hollow sections, and the same-looking grade designation can appear under both standards. That does not make the products interchangeable. The principal distinction is the condition in which the finished hollow section is produced: EN 10210 covers hot-finished structural hollow sections, while EN 10219 covers cold-formed welded structural hollow sections.

A particularly important point is that EN 10210 is not a seamless-only standard. EN 10210 hollow sections may be seamless or welded, provided the finished product meets the standard's applicable manufacturing and delivery requirements. This is a common source of confusion because “hot-finished” is sometimes incorrectly used as if it meant “seamless.”

For a buyer, the safest rule is simple: always specify both the product standard and the grade. “S355J2H” by itself is incomplete purchasing information.

What “hot-finished” means in EN 10210

The current EN 10210-1 scope covers hollow sections that are either formed hot or are formed cold and subsequently heat treated so that the finished product reaches a metallurgical condition equivalent to a hot-formed product.

That point matters. “EN 10210” is not simply another name for a welded tube made from hot-rolled strip. It is a finished structural hollow-section product standard with its own technical delivery requirements.

What “cold formed” means in EN 10219

EN 10219-1 covers cold-formed welded structural hollow sections. Under the current 2006 standard, the section is formed cold without a subsequent overall heat treatment of the finished hollow section.

Cold forming affects the finished geometry and material state, especially in square and rectangular sections where the corners are formed by deformation. This is one reason why engineers and buyers should not take a section-property table from one product family and apply it automatically to the other.

The 2019 Part 2 standards make the separation particularly important: each standard contains its own dimensional tolerances and rules for calculating sectional properties.

If both products say S355NH, what does the “N” mean?

This is a frequent source of confusion.

Under the European steel designation system, N denotes a normalized or normalizing-rolled condition associated with the steel grade, while H denotes a hollow section. In an EN 10219 product, the presence of “N” in a grade such as S355NH does not mean that the completed cold-formed hollow section was subsequently normalized after forming.

The complete designation therefore has to be read together with the product standard. A grade symbol cannot be interpreted independently of the manufacturing and delivery rules of the standard under which the finished section is certified.

Are EN 10210 sections mechanically “better”?

That is too broad a conclusion.

Hot finishing and cold forming can produce different residual-stress patterns, corner characteristics and section properties. Those differences can matter for structural design, fabrication and certain loading conditions. But it is not technically sound to turn that into a universal rule that one standard is “better” than the other.

The correct question is:

Which product standard, grade, dimensional properties and design assumptions are required for this structure?

If a design is based on EN 10210 section properties, substituting an EN 10219 section with similar nominal outside dimensions should be checked rather than assumed.

Do the dimensions and tolerances differ?

Yes. The dimensional standards are separate:

  • EN 10210-2:2019 covers tolerances, dimensions and sectional properties for hot-finished structural hollow sections.
  • EN 10219-2:2019 does the same for cold-formed welded structural hollow sections.

Their product ranges are also not identical. For example, NEN's current summaries state wall thicknesses up to 120 mm within the EN 10210-2 scope and up to 40 mm within the EN 10219-2 scope. That does not mean every size within those maxima is commercially available; mill capability is a separate question.

What changes in procurement?

A useful RFQ should state at least:

  1. Product standard — EN 10210-1 or EN 10219-1.
  2. Grade — for example S355J2H, S355NH or another required grade.
  3. Shape and dimensions — CHS, RHS or SHS; OD or side dimensions; wall thickness.
  4. Length and length tolerance.
  5. Dimensional standard — normally the corresponding Part 2.
  6. Inspection document — for example EN 10204 type 3.1 if required.
  7. Impact, NDT or supplementary project requirements, if any.
  8. Surface, marking, traceability and fabrication requirements where the project specification adds them.

A request such as “S355J2H tube 300 × 20” leaves too much open: it does not state whether the purchaser requires a hot-finished EN 10210 section or a cold-formed EN 10219 section.

Can an EN 10219 product be substituted for EN 10210?

Not automatically.

Even where nominal strength and grade naming look similar, a substitution review should check:

  • the governing design specification;
  • section properties used in the structural calculation;
  • dimensional tolerances;
  • material condition and toughness requirements;
  • welding and fabrication requirements;
  • project or client restrictions;
  • certification and traceability.

The purchaser or responsible engineer should approve the change when the original specification calls for one standard.

A 2026 standards note

As of 19 September 2026, NEN still lists EN 10210-1:2006 and EN 10219-1:2006 as current. Draft 2026 revisions are under development. The drafts explicitly emphasize that even when cold-formed and hot-finished grades can have comparable mechanical properties, the sectional properties of square and rectangular hollow sections in the two product families are not necessarily equivalent.

For a contract, use the edition stated in the PO/project specification. A draft standard does not automatically replace the contractual edition.
